Save Berwyn Trees

Numerous trees in Berwyn IL are being excessively pruned, having a large amount of foliage bearing branches removed. These trees are having their crowns raised too high, including many being "lion's tailed". This severe degradation of our trees needs to be stopped. Also, some apparently healthy trees are being cut down.

The importance of trees

Trees clean the air, give shade and provide habitat for small animals. They also contribute to real estate values, and a block with degraded trees may have the opposite effect. They also reduce global warming by removing CO2 from the air. Berwyn is a City of Trees and now many trees are being "lions tailed"or having their crown excessively raised block by block. The 1800 block of Scoville and the 1800 t0 2200 blocks of Maple and Wisconsin are examples of this excessive pruning approach. If you live on a beautiful tree lined block with lovely trees overhanging the street, your block may be next. You should consider taking pictures beforehand just in case your block is chosen. While the focus of this site is the excessive pruning, healthy appearing ash and other trees are also being cut with no apparent signs of disease.

If you have any before/after photos to share of your parkway tree, please post them on the Facebook page -https://www.facebook.com/Save-Berwyns-Trees-608915309243371/

Please send a message via the Facebook page (or here if not a Facebook user), if interested in helping with this battle. The bad pruning had previously stopped with Homer Tree Service performing the pruning, but the current contract is again with Lyons Tree Service. This is the company who had been butchering the trees for many years. The contract never changes, with the horrendous guideline of removing every limb / branch below 18 feet on any mature tree.
